Students gain inspiration from industry

Students were able to tap into industry knowledge this week as our High Pavement campus opened its doors to careers advisors from local businesses and universities.

Employers such as Centre Parcs and the RAF joined universities including Derby University, Leeds Beckett and Nottingham Trent University to provide students with help and advice on what it takes to succeed in their chosen sectors.

Students enjoyed access to an interview assessment centre to help give them a head start in terms of interview techniques and the ‘dos and don’ts’ of interviewing, alongside more specialist support relating to their chosen academic area, with workshops available in many subjects including psychology, the creative industries, pharmacy, nursing, and event management.

One of the attendees, Mariam Raza, studies A Level Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Physics, and she found the Careers for Pharmacists workshop from Bradford University very useful, commenting: “It’s given me some great insight into what studying pharmacy at university would be like. They also gave me some useful information about what the course is like at Bradford University; to be honest I didn’t know that Bradford did a degree in it, but after hearing about the course and the facilities I’m thinking of applying there as well now.”

Joe Gellion, who is studying A Level English, Art and Design, and Psychology, went to the Importance of Play Workshop from Derby University. She said: “I attended this workshop as I’m interested in doing a foundation degree in primary education.

“They were talking about planning activities and the importance of play for children in education, it was really engaging and interesting to hear what they had to say. At the end of the session I got the lecturer’s contact details to talk to them a little bit more about working in the sector, which was nice of them to offer and something I will take them up on.”
