I declare Creative 122 officially open!

A shop selling creative items made by ncn staff and students was officially opened by the Lord Mayor of Nottingham on 10th May at a special launch event held at our City campus in The Lace Market.

The circus-themed event, which was organised by ncn Business Studies students as part of their university-level course, began with the official cutting of the ribbon, which followed with a variety of stalls, games and entertainment, including a performance from talented ncn music student Lauren March.

The Lord Mayor of Nottingham, Councillor Michael Edwards, commented: “Design was my favourite O-Level subject at school so this brought back some fantastic memories for me. The enthusiasm from the students was clear to see and I was particularly impressed with the coat on sale in the shop. My visit was topped off with a delicious meal in the ncn Adams Restaurant, where it was lovely to meet members of the public also enjoying their lunch.”

Foundation Degree Fashion student, Chloe White, 32, said: “I was so pleased to be part of the launch, there was a real buzz about the event and it was great to meet the Lord Mayor. What I love about the shop is the fact that it gives everybody the chance to showcase what they’re passionate about, not just people on creative courses but staff and students from across the whole college.”

The idea for the shop came from ncn Fashion Course Leader Kathy Steadman who wanted to create a platform for staff and students to showcase their work. “The launch far exceeded my expectations. It was wonderful to have so many people come to join us in our celebrations, and hopefully this amazing support will continue as Creative 122 evolves.

“The shop is fantastic exposure for the brilliant work our staff and students produce, and my hope is that it will not only showcase their talents, but will also provide them with important commercial experience, and even open doors for them within the creative industry.”

Business Studies student Sam Cross and his team organised the launch as part of their course. He said: “It was really satisfying to see months of hard work finally come together in such a fantastic event. It was challenging at times and a lot of responsibility to ensure everything ran smoothly, but we all worked well as a team and I learnt so much from the experience.”

Based in the Lace Market entrance of ncn City Adams Building, Creative 122 is open to the public from 12-2pm, Tuesdays to Thursdays, selling everything from artwork to accessories, birthday cards to fashion garments, jewellery to CDs, and even handmade guitars made from vintage cigar boxes and biscuit tins.

If you’re interested in submitting your work to sell in the shop, simply email details to kathy.steadman@ncn.ac.uk. Click on the following links to find out more: Creative 122 Conditions of Item Acceptance. How to submit items for sale in Creative 122.

With special thanks to the ncn HE Centre for sponsoring Creative 122.
