Hair and make-up extravaganza

Hair and make-up extravaganza

Talented Nottingham College Hair and Media Make-up trainees wowed an audience of friends, family and industry sponsors, at a special catwalk show and awards presentation.

This hair and media make-up showcase, held at the College’s Basford Hall campus, included Level 3 body art and Level 3 avant-garde hair, with colourful themes such as movies, theatre and sea aquarium.

Caroline Sheard, Head of Faculty - Lifestyle, said: "It was an amazing evening which showcased the talents of our students, and recognised all their hard work and achievements throughout the year. A big thank you to our industry judges for their time and generous student prizes.”

Krystal Sutherland, 29, came first in the Level 3 hairdressing heat, winning £100 in vouchers towards a course at Aston and Fincher (trade hair and beauty supply wholesalers) as well as a vintage tutorial from The Little Vintage Beauty Parlour on Station Street, and a box of hair and beauty products.

She said: “I chose Charlie and the Chocolate Factory as the theme because I thought it would allow me to show my creativity. I used polystyrene balls, colourful jelly-beans, and lollypops for the hair piece and I used techniques like plaiting, curling and extensions to show different skills. The standard was really high and I was convinced I hadn’t won, so to hear my name called out was a complete shock but such a great feeling.”

First place in the make-up heat went to Lorren Hopcroft, 22, who is studying Level 3 Diploma in Fashion, Theatre & Media Hair and Make-Up. Lorren’s body art design was themed around sea anatomy and took seven hours to complete.

She said: “I was so stunned to be called out as the winner in my heat! There were so many amazing designs that stood out so it was a real surprise to be chosen, and the fact that industry professionals were judging was even more special. I really enjoyed being part of the competition because it gave me the opportunity to think outside the box and be creative, and it was nice to be able to show off some of the skills I’ve learnt on my course to an audience, especially my family who were there to celebrate with me.”

Lorren is progressing to Bournemouth University to study Make-up for Media and Performance. She adds: “At the moment I’m really interested in special effects and media make-up, but I’m keeping an open mind for university because you never know where the course might take me.”

Second place in the Level 3 hairdressing heat went to Roxanne Tantun, and Tia-Rose Mckenzie achieved second place in the Level 3 Make-up category.
