Budding film makers hit the big screen

Young movie makers got the chance to watch a premiere screening of their own short film at Nottingham’s Broadway cinema on 24th March, as part of the BFI Film Academy. 

The project gives talented filmmakers aged 16 to 19 the opportunity to develop their filmmaking skills and helps to prepare them for the industry. 

A Level students Sabina Szczerba, Kirsty Macadam and Rory Tasker are studying Film Studies at ncn High Pavement Sixth Form Academy and worked together on the comedy drama Tuna on Wednesdays. 

Kirsty, 17, from Calverton, has accepted a conditional offer at the prestigious Ravensbourne institution in London to study Digital Film Production and hopes to become a film director one day. She said: “I enjoyed meeting like-minded people who were as passionate about the film industry as I am. It was useful to gain the experience of working on a film set and it gave me a greater appreciation for the films that we have studied on my A Level course. 

“It was very nerve-wracking to have so many people watching the film we had created but I was so proud of the final film and it felt very satisfying to see it on the same screen that I had watched both La La Land and Fantastic Beasts on!

“After completing my degree I hope to get a job in the industry, maybe as a producer, although my dream career is a director!” 

Sabina, 18, from Gedling, took the role of Director of Photography. She said: “It was overwhelming seeing our film on the biggest screen at Broadway - shown to more than 260 people! It was a great learning experience and a real insight into the industry.” 

The course started in October last year and the young filmmakers have spent more than 120 hours working alongside industry professionals, learning about the different aspects of filmmaking from writing, editing and camera composition to special effects, lighting and sound.

ncn A Level Film Studies Lecturer, Zoe Cutter, said: “The BFI Film Academy course has provided our students with a brilliant opportunity to pursue their passion for filmmaking, and build on their skills and knowledge by working with industry professionals. After hours of dedication, giving up their evenings and weekends, they have collaborated together to produce superb short films.

“The experience has also added value to each of their UCAS applications, and enabled Rory and Kirsty, who both hope to pursue careers in the industry, the opportunity to extend their individual show-reels for university interviews.”
