Awards success for talented Nottingham students

11/05/2017

Creative students from both ncn and Central College were honoured at the 2017 Young Creative Awards on Wednesday 10 May.

First year ncn Art & Design student, Isobelle Farrar, 16, was named Young Creative of the Year for her Graphic Design piece. Award-winning local-based artist, Wolfgang Buttress presented Isobelle with her award in front of a packed audience at Nottingham Playhouse. Isobelle’s winning piece depicts aspects of Nottingham life past and present with future aspirations evident to deal with issues such as homelessness and ecology.

Between the two colleges, eight students were named winners of their individual categories with a further 13 receiving highly commended awards.

Hundreds of people attended the 9th Nottingham Young Creative Awards, which aim to give people aged 13 to 24 who live, study or work in Nottingham the chance to show off their creative work, network with future employers and gain valuable industry experience and mentoring. A record number of young creatives submitted their work in 10 different categories this year to meet the 2017 theme of ‘Nottingham, Future City’.

Young Creative of the Year and Graphic Design 16-28 category winner Isobelle Farrar is studying the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Fine Art at ncn and one day hopes to become an illustrator. She said: “When they announced my name I was completely shocked! I was hoping to do well in my category but I never expected to win overall. As part of my course we cover industry skills and it was in this class that I was told about the competition. My lecturer encouraged me to go for it and I’m so pleased I did because it’s been a great experience. I enjoyed every minute working on my submission piece so to win is just the cherry on top.”

ncn and Central Creative Arts Head of Faculty, Jonathan Laud, said: “The talent I witness every day when I come to work is simply outstanding, and so to see so many of our students recognised and rewarded for their work was really special, and testament to their hard work, dedication and passion for their chosen subject.

“As ncn and Central come together we become the largest creative training provider in the region. To have so many of our students crowned winners and named highly commended is fantastic for both colleges and an excellent indication of what’s to come.”

Nigel Cooke, Young Creative Awards Trustee, said: “Isobelle’s graphic style drawing pieces were just amazing, they were thought provoking, emotional and she really deserves to be named Young Creative of the Year 2017. I can see great potential for Isabelle’s work. The awards are all about inspiring, supporting and encouraging creativity in the young people of Nottingham. These awards are becoming one of the most exciting events in Nottingham’s creative calendar. Every year I am impressed by the creativity and talent of Nottingham young people. We are proud to shine a light on their imagination, skill and dedication.”

All of this year’s winners in each category received a cash prize of £100 and there will also be opportunities for public exhibition of their work, mentoring, support or work experience from local creative businesses. The aim is to open doors for young creative people and match them with businesses who can offer everything from work experience and workshops, to promoting their work through exhibitions and creative networks.
