Are you an employer looking for an apprentice?
Yes? Then a New College Nottingham Apprenticeship could be the answer you’re looking for!
What is an Apprenticeship?
Apprenticeships combine work-based learning with NVQ qualifications, Technical Certificates and Key Skills.
You go to work part of the week and to college the rest of the time. For example:
- four days a week and go to college for one day
- full-time and take a week out, on a regular basis, to go to college
Apprentices work with an employer to gain the experience and skills needed to do the job, and, at the same time, get the qualifications to prove they can do it!
ncn offer Apprenticeships in the following areas:
What will I do at college?
You, your employer and ncn tutors will draw up an Individual Learning Plan, which outlines the work you will do. At college, you learn practical skills as well as the theory behind them, and evidence of your work is collected in a portfolio and used to assess your achievements. For some Apprenticeships, you will also need to sit assessments which are either practical or written, and all apprentices much achieve at least Level 1 Communication and Application of Number Key Skills, with advanced apprentices needing to achieve Level 2.
Apprenticeships are available at ncn in two levels:
Apprenticeships
- A Level 2 course, which means you’ll work towards a National Vocational Qualification Level 2 (NVQ) in your chosen specialist area
- You'll also gain Key Skills qualifications which teach you valuable skills such as problem solving, working with people, and communications
- Although there is no fixed time scale it should take approximately twelve months to complete
If you successfully complete an Apprenticeship you can apply to progress on to an Advanced Apprenticeship.
Advanced Apprenticeships
- A Level 3 course which means you’ll work towards a National Vocational Qualification Level 3 (NVQ) in your chosen specialist area
- You’ll continue to advance your training in Key Skills
- Although there is no fixed time scale it should take approximately eighteen months to complete
What do I need to start an apprenticeship?
This varies depending on the type of apprenticeship you want to do, but, as a rough guide, you will need to:
- be at least 16 years old
- have a full-time job with a company that will let you do the apprenticeship
- have the required grades in the necessary GCSEs (the GCSEs and grades you need depends on the industry you choose to work in)
- have a college place, for which you will need to apply, attend an interview and do an assessment
- be prepared to commit to your apprenticeship for up to two years
I want to do an apprenticeship, but I can't find a job. What else can I do?
ncn offers alternative apprenticeship routes for young people who are unable to find suitable work to start a traditional apprenticeship. These are called Programme-led Apprenticeships.
Our programmes are available in a range of subjects and are designed to help young people progress to a work-based apprenticeship, a Further Education study programme at a higher level or move directly to employment.
