Darren Fretwell
Music Performance HND*
“I previously studied music at university and have worked for record companies and on tour with various bands. In 2006, I decided to return to study to get back into the performance side of music. Being closer to home was also important to me, so ncn was the ideal choice in terms of location and finding the right course.
“I really enjoy the performance side of my course and it’s been great having the opportunity to play in a range of different situations and experiment with a variety of instruments. The intensive levels of performing have enabled me to improve my double bass playing and I have also learnt to play the saxophone.
“The lecturers at ncn have a wealth of experience and knowledge in their field. It’s great to work with professionals who push students to achieve their best and prepare them for the real world by setting realistic deadlines and expecting students to achieve them.
“The College also has some really good facilities including theatres, music rooms and music technology suites and there’s been plenty of opportunity to get involved in live performances. I’ve had the opportunity to meet some really talented performers, who I otherwise might not have met, and it’s helped me to get involved in a number of collaborative projects outside of College. These projects have been mostly bands and cover bands in which I have played the Bass or Double Bass.
“I would eventually like to make a career in music either through playing or teaching, but my immediate goal is to further my studies and I’m hoping to do the BA (Hons) Sonic Arts course at ncn next year.”
