Student Profile

Michael Smurthwaite
Service Sector Management BA (Hons) Part-Time

"I’ve been working for a number of years and decided to come back into education to enhance my future career prospects. My manager suggested the Service Sector Management Degree as it would enhance my CV and would be very useful in my current employment as a Heritage Site Supervisor for Wollaton Park, a visitor attraction in Nottingham.

"When I first returned to study I found a number of things quite challenging, including getting back into report and essay writing and balancing my time between full-time work, study and socialising. However, I have worked hard to find the right balance and was rewarded for my efforts with a first class mark in my Marketing exam, which was a great feeling.

"This course has enabled me to better understand the service sector in which I work and I have particularly enjoyed the Marketing aspect of the course. The knowledge and skills that I have gained are directly relevant to my current employment, and have helped me to raise the profile of Wollaton Park and increase the number of visitors.

"I’ve got so much out of my course that I hope to continue with my studies and eventually progress on to a Masters Degree in Visitor Attraction Management at university.

"ncn is a wonderful place to learn. There is always a friendly, relaxed atmosphere and tutors and staff are very knowledgeable and approachable. My advice to anyone who is thinking about studying at ncn is to not hesitate, because it’s a great college and there is something for people of all ages and abilities."
