Study Periods
One of the major differences between High Pavement and school is the provision of Study Periods when students are expected to complement their lessons by working individually and independently.
Students can access well-equipped facilities in the college. Alternatively, if they wish, students can work at home when they have Study Periods. It is worth stating here that success on any course requires private study for each subject each week for example, we will expect about 3 to 4 hours study per week for each AS level out of lesson time. Other commitments such as part-time jobs should not interfere with your daughter/son’s main purpose in being at College. If you do not see work being done at home, then it is unlikely that your daughter or son is making the most of her/his course.
Some students find it difficult to balance successfully an active social life, paid work and studying at College. Your help and support in this area would be very much appreciated.
Learning Agreement
In September a Learning Agreement will be signed by your daughter/son, which should then be brought home to you. This indicates the chosen course of study. It is an important document and should be retained. We will discuss this at the Introductory Event for Parents in September.
Tutorials
All students belong to a Tutor Group, which has timetabled sessions and which form part of a student’s programme of study. The Tutor oversees your daughter/son’s academic and social well-being. The Tutor will hold individual interviews with your daughter/son in order to help guide them through their time with us and to help them make plans for the future. It is very important that your daughter/son attends all timetabled sessions of their tutor group.
Examinations
The majority of external examinations will be January and May/June. Your daughter/son will be issued with a Statement of Entry outlining times/dates of their examinations.
Progress
We will do an initial progress check in October and will write to you if there are any concerns. You will receive the first formal report on your daughter/son in December, which you will then have the opportunity to discuss at our first Parents’ Evening in December. A further report and Parents’ Evening will take place in May.
Individual progress reports can of course be arranged at other times if you wish. Please contact Melanie Pyper, Retention and Achievement Officer to arrange an appointment.
Students will need to be successful in their AS to continue to Year 2. They will need to achieve a minimum of two Grade E’s at AS Level. Students cannot progress onto A2 in a subject if they do not attend ‘Start of A2’ at the end of the summer term.
