Sociology is studied at ncn High Pavement Sixth Form College.
This course can also be studied over two years, or as an intensive one-year programme for post-sixth form students or those aged 19+ at ncn Lace Market ‘A’ Level Centre.
Sociology is the academic study of the ways in which individuals and groups live in society.
What kind of student is this course suitable for?
This course will appeal to students who:
- Want to find out more about how society works
- Want to find out more about social issues like class, ethnicity and gender
- Enjoy looking at how different institutions work, like education, and the family
- Enjoy explaining changes in the rate of crime, or why there are such vast differences in the distribution of wealth throughout the world
- Want a course that will complement other ‘AS’ and ‘A’ Level courses such as English, Economics and Geography

Teaching and learning
A variety of learning experiences are offered at 'A' Level, including short lectures, practical exercises, discussions, videos, games and quizzes as well as more traditional methods. You will be expected to contribute to whole class and small group activities, as well as spend a large amount of time working independently, particularly when reading around topics and completing work at home.
Where the course may lead?
Sociology is a recognised academic ‘A’ Level, which can be used as a requirement for entry into Higher Education. It is also a useful background for employment in many jobs. Some of the more obvious ones are market research, advertising, social work, teaching and personnel management.
