Psychology

Psychology is studied at ncn High Pavement Sixth Form College.

This course can also be studied over two years, or as an intensive one-year programme for post-sixth form students or those aged 19+ at ncn Lace Market 'A' Level Centre.

What kind of student is this course suitable for?

This course will appeal to students who:

  • Enjoy exploring issues dealing with how and why people behave in certain ways
  • Want to find out more about the link between people’s behaviour and their environment
  • Enjoy planning and carrying out investigations to look for patterns and explanations in human behaviour
  • Want a course that will complement other ‘AS’ and ‘A’ Level course such as English and Business Studies

What will I achieve from the course?

  • Develop awareness and understanding of psychological theories, research, case studies and methods used to collect data
  • Explore topics, which reflect current contemporary issues, as well as earlier case studies
  • Explore the different areas of psychology, in particular cognitive, developmental, biological, social, individual differences and research methods
  • Analyse and interpret your own or second-hand data and evaluate the findings
  • Develop an awareness of the ethical issues in psychology, particularly in the field of research

Teaching and learning

A variety of learning experiences are offered at 'A' Level, including short lectures, practical exercises, discussions, videos, games and quizzes as well as more traditional methods. You will be expected to contribute to whole class and small group activities, as well as spend a large amount of time working independently, particularly when reading around topics and completing work at home.

Classes are normally shared between 2 teachers, and will have 3 double lessons per week in both the first and second years.

Where the course my lead?

Psychology is a recognised academic ‘A’ Level, which can be used as a requirement for entry into Higher Education. It is also a useful background for employment in many jobs. Some of the more obvious ones are market research, advertising, social work, teaching and personnel management.

Entry Requirements

'AS': at least Grade C or above in GCSE English Language and GCSE Science
'A2': at least Grade E in 'AS' Psychology

2 units at 'AS' Level, including:

  • Cognitive Psychology, Developmental Psychology and Research Methods
  • Biological Psychology, Social Psychology and Individual Differences

2 units at 'A2' Level, including:

  • Relationships, Eating Behaviour and Aggression
  • Psychopathology, Psychology in Action and Research Methods

Assessment

Examinations.

A Higher Education course in Clinical Psychology, Educational Psychology or Business, or a career in one of these areas.
