  • 'AS' in Year 1
  • 'A2' in Year 2

Entry Requirements

'AS':

  • At least Grade C in GCSE English, preferably Grade B.

'A2':

  • At least Grade D in 'AS' Communication and Culture

Course Content

2 units at 'AS' Level, including:

  • Understanding Communication and Culture: personal identity, everyday practices, popular and high culture, cultural analysis
  • The Individual and Contemporary Culture: clothes and identity, good/bad taste, or body image and a presentation on personal space, shopping, popular music or graffiti

2 units at 'A2' Level, including:

  • Communicating Culture: spaces and places, fictions, or objects of desire. Analysis using social/cultural theory, and key concepts such as narrative, technology, power and ideology
  • Communication and Culture in Practice: body adornment, cinema going, celebrity and a creative website, podcast or PowerPoint presentation based on the written study

Communication and Culture will allow you to relate your own life experiences to contemporary academic debates. The course involves the close examination of cultural practices, cultural products and the ways in which cultural meanings are communicated.

Assessment

A combination of examinations and coursework.
