Changing your Internet Explorer browser settings

For optimal compatibility with this website, we recommend that you use the latest version of Internet Explorer, which can be downloaded off the Microsoft Internet Explorer website.

To change the font and colour:

  1. On the 'Tools' menu, click 'Internet Options'.
  2. On the 'General' tab, click on 'Accessibility'.
  3. Tick each of the boxes in the Formatting section.
  4. Click OK.

Internet Explorer will now ignore fonts and colours specified on web sites, allowing to you to set your own font and colour scheme.

To change the text font:

  1. On the 'Tools' menu, click 'Internet Options'.
  2. On the 'General' tab, click 'Fonts'.
  3. In the 'Web page font' and 'Plain text font' lists, choose the fonts you would like to use.
  4. Click 'OK'.

You have now specified which fonts Internet Explorer will use when browsing the Internet.

To enlarge the text:

  1. On the 'Browser' menu click 'View'.
  2. Click 'Text size'.
  3. Choose the size of text

The text can become smaller or larger depending on the text size you choose.

To change the text colour and background colour:

  1. On the 'Tools' menu, click 'Internet Options'.
  2. On the 'General' tab, click 'Colours'.
  3. Deselect the 'Use Windows Colours' tick box.
  4. Select the box next to 'Text' and choose a colour. Click 'OK'.
  5. Select the box next to 'Background' and choose a colour. Click 'OK'.

Selecting different background and text colours can help with readability. For example, people with dyslexia can use a light yellow or light blue background to make the text easier to read.

To stop web page graphics loading:

  1. Under 'Tools', click 'Internet Options'.
  2. On the 'Advanced' tab, scroll down to the 'Multimedia' heading.
  3. Remove the ticks from each box in the graphics section (Animations, videos, pictures and images).
  4. Click 'Apply', and then click 'OK'.
  5. If graphics still appear, select 'View' from the toolbar, then 'Refresh', or press F5.

Stopping the graphics from loading can reduce download time and make the page easier to read.

To change the size of the window:

  1. Click 'View' then 'Full Screen' from the toolbar, or press F11.

A full-screen browser window can be easier to read.
