There are various services that can be used to provide additional support to students.
Literacy, Language and Numeracy Support
Literacy, language and numeracy support may be required by students on courses at all levels up to and including Higher Education (HE).
This support from highly trained and experienced staff is available across all ncn campuses.
After an initial talk with an Additional Learning Support tutor, support
may be offered in three ways:
- Individual support
- Small group support
- In-class support
The literacy, language and numeracy support is coordinated by team leaders who work with specific curriculum areas and learning support tutors.
Communication and Interpreting Support
At New College Nottingham, we aim to ensure that deaf and hearing impaired learners have full access to the College courses and services.
We have a dedicated Deaf/Hearing Impaired Access team and can provide:
- Sign language communication (BSL/SSE)
- Qualified teacher of the deaf support
- Notetaking
- Tutorials
- Adaptation of materials
- Technical equipment
- Deaf awareness for tutors and peers
Our goal is to provide a friendly, effective service enabling deaf and hearing impaired learners to achieve their full potential and use the preferred method of communication.
Visual Impairment Support
At ncn we work closely with LEA Inclusion Support Service and other organisations along with internal specialist staff to provide a comprehensive service for students with a visual impairment.
The type of support we are able to offer includes:
- Transition into college
- Qualified tutor of visually impaired support
- Additional tutorial support
- Access to specialist equipment
- Course reading materials converted to Braille, large print, tactile diagrams or materials on tape or disk
- Assistance in class
- Mobility and route learning
- Transition arrangements for HE
Support for Specific Learning Difficulties/ Emotional and Behavioural Support
The term 'specific learning difficulty' refers to a range of difficulties including among others, autistic spectrum disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, dyspraxia, dyslexia and dyscalculia.
The type of support ncn can provide includes:
- Specialist assessments
- Additional tuition
- Help from a learning support worker
- Special examination arrangements
- Transition arrangements for Higher Education
- Learning Mentor
- Making adjustments to the learning environment
Physical Mobility Support
We have a team of support workers who can provide assistance for students with physical mobility issues.
The type of support we are able to offer includes:
- Support throughout admissions and induction
- Special examination arrangements
- Escort to and between classes
- In-class support
- Specialist equipment required for the course
- Physical access
- Personal care
