For many people, the New Year is a time to focus on losing a few pounds. But the Learning and Skills Council is doing the exact opposite by helping people add a few pounds, to their bank balances, through the Adult Leaning Grant (ALG).
ALG can offer up to £30 per week to adults aged 19 and over, who return to learning and training, to help out with those extra costs - from travel and books to materials and childcare.
One Nottingham man who is already taking advantage of ALG is 21-year-old Karsten Roe. After enrolling on the Media BTEC National Diploma at ncn, Karsten is learning lots of new skills, providing a solid platform to build a career in the TV, music or film industry.
Now in his second year, Karsten is part way through his final project and the £30 a week he receives through ALG has helped towards buying and making props. Karsten said: “When I started looking into courses it was important for me to stay at home because I couldn’t afford to move away and I wanted to be near my friends and family.
“I found out that I was eligible for the money which not only helps pay for the props I need for the course but also goes towards my travel expenses. It really encourages me to get up and go to college every day.
“The course is great and I’m enjoying my current project, a zombie drama which I’m working on with three others. “I’d really like to go on and study the TV and film industry further at university and one day, after my education and lots of work experience, I hope to become the next Steven Spielberg, or better!”
You can use ALG to study for a wide range of qualifications, including BTECs, NVQs, GSCEs and A Levels across a huge range of subject areas. Wherever you want to be in life, you can find the course for you.
If you are thinking about improving your skills by returning to learning why not start looking at your options and find out if ALG could really help you too.
