Three students from ncn were announced winners at this year’s Young Creative Awards on 5 July at Nottingham Contemporary. The awards gave young people across the city the opportunity to step into the limelight and be recognised for their creative talents.
BND Fashion Design student Merrisa Gerard’s urban cycling jacket won the Fashion Design 18-22 category. Her garment has a high zip-up collar to protect the cyclist’s face and big contrast fabric cuffs to give extra protection from the wind.
Miriam French, BND Fine Art student, achieved first place in the Fashion Design 14-17 category with a unique pair of earrings made from old Nike trainers, and Fashion Design student Kimberly Naylor was named runner up.
A second BND Fine Art student, Corey Bell, was awarded overall winner in the Visual Arts and Crafts 14-17 category. His evocative painting depicts and captures the personality of Nottingham boxer Paul Daley.
Councillor Jon Collins, Chair of One Nottingham and Leader of Nottingham City Council, said: “We have some incredibly talented young people in our city and these awards recognise and celebrate their abilities. With Nottingham aiming to become a world class city for culture, learning and business, it was a great opportunity for the city’s young talents to make their mark and step into the limelight and gain some valuable experience that will help them if they choose a career in our creative industries.”
