Two Design students’ innovative approach to health and safety training has resulted in ncn being highly commended by the Association of Colleges (AoC).
The College set Digital Artwork and Design Support students, Paul Sutherns (animator) and James Zakarian (illustrator), the challenge to devise a training package about risk assessment which was interesting and engaging for College staff and students.
Now in its sixth year, the AoC Health & Safety Champion Award aims to recognise colleges that are able to demonstrate to the wider Further Education sector, by example, the benefits of following good safety and health practices in a particular topic area.
Using Flash-based animations Paul and James came up with the design idea of bringing ‘alive’ the ‘R’ from Risk and ‘A’ from Assessment allowing the trainee to move through the menu of hazards. This was intended to be a light-hearted opening to the subject of risk assessment and to engage the trainee.
ncn Health and Safety Manager, Steven Duty, commented: “We were keen to involve students in the project to bring a modern twist to a subject which is often misunderstood as uninteresting or overly bureaucratic. The students were a pleasure to work with. Their professionalism and enthusiasm was crucial to the success of the project.”
ncn lecturer, Chris Coldbeck, added: “The work fitted into their course well as it largely consists of taking on briefs from customers and producing practical, appropriate designs.”
