VQ Day dessert challenge

Introduction to Professional Chefs Diploma students took part in a plated dessert challenge on Wednesday 23 June to showcase the skills learned on their course and to mark national VQ Day.

Eleven learners created their own plated dessert which was then judged on presentation, taste and execution by Chef Lecturer Mark Jones and Nottingham Post Education Correspondent Michael Greenwell.

The winning dish of strawberry tart with an orange sorbet was created by Sam McLoughlin, 16, who received a signed James Martin cookery book.

Sam said: “I’m coming back to ncn in September to continue with the Professional Chefs Diploma, and eventually I’d like to open a ‘silver spoon’ tea shop specialising in pastry, so I’m really pleased to win.”

Sacha McCarthy, Head of School, said: “Vocational courses enable our students to learn in real work environments such as our pastry kitchens, whilst gaining recognised qualifications. This combination of theory and practical learning will be of huge benefit to them in their future careers.”
