Enterprising ncn students have come up with a tasty way to make money, donate to charity and showcase their entrepreneurial skills.
Eight students studying on the new ‘Progress into Business’ course have created a global recipe book as part of Enterprise UK’s Make Your Mark with a Tenner challenge which took place in March.
The students were each loaned a £10 note to help them start a creative and enterprising business idea that would make a profit and a difference to their community as part of the national competition.
More than 130 copies of the cook book have already been sold. They have donated half of the money to the East Midlands NSPCC’s Child’s Voice Appeal and shared the remaining profit between them.
Rebecca Kenton, ncn Business Lecturer, said: "Make Your Mark with a Tenner has been a fantastic project to be involved with and the students have really enjoyed all aspects of setting up their business, from collecting recipes from around the world to designing the book and encouraging people to buy it.
“When the students heard that the East Midlands Child’s Voice Appeal urgently needed funds, they decided to donate £160 of the profit to help children in Nottingham get the help and advice that they need through its helpline.”
Nottingham entrepreneur and deputy chairman of the NSPCC’s East Midlands Child’s Voice Appeal Steering Group, Andrew Springhall, said of the donation:
“It’s wonderful to receive donations from any source, but especially encouraging when they come from an initiative powered by young people – those who stand to benefit from the enhanced services of the expanded NSPCC ChildLine base.”
Peter Jones, Chair of Enterprise UK added: “Make Your Mark with a Tenner harnesses the unrivalled energy and creativity of young people. Their fantastic achievements increase each year that we run it, proof that if you trust young people to act entrepreneurially they will rise to the challenge.”
