A team of degree students from New College Nottingham (ncn) have won the first East Midlands Institute of Hospitality (IOH) Environment Debate, held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Nottingham on 11th March. The debate was the IOH’s premier event for 2009 and was opened by Philippe Rossiter, IOH Chief Executive.
The debate, which will become an annual event, centred around two specific motions;’ Do the benefits of Tourism outweigh the costs?’ and ‘Is nuclear power the best way to meet the ever-increasing energy needs of the Hospitality Industry?’.
Two teams of ncn BA (Hons) Service Sector management students competed in the debate and were supported by two members of ncn staff.
The IOH described the discourse as well articulated with reasoned and objective arguments for and against the motions. ncn student team member Meg Hale commented “The whole event was really exciting and challenging.
“The debate provided a great opportunity for me to articulate my views and knowledge and develop my debating skills.”
The winning team of ncn students Sarah Neeworth, Sarah Allsop and ncn HE courses coordinator Alan Willis were presented with a joint winners’ cup and individual prizes of book tokens along with a year’s membership of the IOH courtesy of Philippe Rossiter.
