Forty five ncn Fashion students showcased their unique designs for a photoshoot at Brewhouse Yard – Museum of Nottingham Life on 16 October.

The inspiration for the project was taken from a recent visit to the Imperial War Museum in London where the students visited the ‘From War to Windrush’ exhibition - about the thousands of West Indian men and women who served in the British forces and Merchant Navy during the First and Second World Wars.

Using the concept of ‘make do and mend’ students also learnt traditional war-period techniques including darning, blanket stitch and rag rugging.

Each of the BTEC National Diploma Fashion and Clothing students designed and created an outfit which they modelled themselves, as well as creating their overall look including hair, make-up, accessories and poses.

Fashion Tutor, Marlene Lewis, commented: “I am extremely impressed with the students’ designs. These are first year students and most have never used a sewing machine or cut a pattern before. To create such professional garments during their first project is an excellent achievement.”
