ncn is celebrating after being named an Association of Colleges Beacon Award winner. The Awards, which this year celebrate 16 years of rewarding outstanding teaching and learning in further education colleges, were announced at a ceremony hosted by comedienne and author Shappi Khorsandi at the AoC’s Annual Conference in Birmingham on November 17.
ncn won the Learning and Skills Improvement Service (LSIS) Award for the Leadership of Innovation in Curriculum Development. The College has won the Award for the development of its ‘Keeping Warm’ scheme to reduce the number of students who change their mind about accepting a place at College between the offer and actual enrolment. ncn runs a two-day pre-enrolment programme which aims to make the transition from school to College more effective for young people by increasing their confidence and self-esteem.
The programme involves team-working on tasks such as designing a construction project, opening a nail bar or launching a local business, and existing students act as ‘buddies’ or mentors. The scheme has led to improved recruitment, retention and progression of students.
ncn Principal, Geoff Hall, said: “We are thrilled to receive this award in recognition of the talent and enthusiasm of our staff and learners. Our flagship ‘Keeping Warm’ initiative helps ease the transition from school to College, enhances the learners’ FE experience and makes them more likely to achieve their qualification.“
The College will host a local celebration event in the New Year and will be presented with its Award by the Rt. Hon. Kevin Brennan MP, Minister of State for Further Education, at a national presentation ceremony due to be held at Westminster in February 2010.
