Markus Wernitznig will have his innovative ‘Brit-inspired’ shirt-dress design showcased at Graduate Fashion Week in June, after winning a place in the final of the WorldSkills UK Made-to-Measure fashion design competition.

The 17 year old first year Foundation Degree in Fashion Interpretation & Practice student entered WorldSkills UK following his success in a college competition. After his design was short-listed from over 65 UK applicants, he competed in a fierce semi-final in April, in which he constructed a calico ‘toile’.

The Made to Measure competition is run in conjunction with Skillfast-UK, the Sector Skills Council for fashion and textiles. For 2009, the competition has a ‘truly British’ theme, with competitors taking inspiration from Vivienne Westwood.

Markus will now compete against short-listed candidates from colleges and universities across the UK in the final at Northumbria University between 5th – 7th June and his finished dress will be showcased during Graduate Fashion Week from 8th – 11th June.

Markus said: “It has involved a lot of hard work, and I couldn’t have done it without the support of my tutor Carole. I am looking forward to the next stage where I can realise my design, creating the finished garment.”
