The culinary skills of six students on the ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) World Cookery course was celebrated at a special food tasting and award presentation on 25th June at ncn Bath Street campus.

The students each prepared an individual dish for guests to enjoy, taken from the ‘ESOL World Café Recipe Book’, which students produced as part of their course. The students also received certificates at the event to acknowledge their hard work and dedication to the project.

The ‘ESOL World Café Recipe Book’ includes a selection of traditional recipes, contributed by the students, to showcase their home-country cuisine including: Tunisian chicken couscous, Iranian vegetables, Portuguese tuna fillets, and African spicy lamb rice.

During the course students complete a basic food hygiene qualification. They also gained practical experience, preparing, serving and selling their recipes in the College café.

The ESOL World Cookery group was established through obtaining funding from ‘Lions’ Lair’, a College initiative based on the television series ‘Dragons’ Den’. Course leader Nina Scaife successfully pitched her idea to launch the course, café and book.

Nina Scaife said: “My aim was to establish a course that would be practical and creative and provide opportunities for learner engagement and progression. It can be a daunting experience learning and speaking a different language so the students should be especially proud with what they’ve achieved.”
