Care to learn

Childcare funding for all students aged 19 or under is covered by the Government's Care to Learn scheme. Application packs are available from any ncn campus reception or by calling the Learner Support helpline on 0800 121 8989.

Students aged 20 and over

Childcare element of the Working Tax Credit (WTC)

Some of your childcare costs may be paid by the childcare element of WTC. All WTC claimants must be working at least 16 hours per week. For more information, please contact HM Revenues and Customs on 0845 300 3900.

Flexible entitlement

All three- and four-year-olds are currently entitled to free part-time early education of up to 15 hours per week for up to two years before reaching compulsory school age. Please ask your childcare provider for more information. Where possible you will be expected to use these hours whilst studying at College.

Learner Support Fund (LSF)

Further education students may be eligible for assistance from the ncn Learner Support Fund, which is designed to help with the costs of childcare, equipment and travel. All students will be expected to contribute 10% of their childcare costs. This includes students who are in receipt of a means tested benefit or low income. There will also be a cap on the amount we can fund for external childcare settings including childminders, breakfast and afterschool clubs.

Students who qualify for funding external to the Learner Support Fund will be required to claim their costs from the external source before any contribution will be considered.

Childcare facilities can be found at, or attached to, most ncn campuses. If you wish to be considered for a contribution towards your college-related childcare costs, you must apply to the ncn nursery closest to your place of study in the first instance. Students must contact the College on 0115 9 100 100 for information on funding eligibility prior to contacting your ncn campus nursery. Places are limited.

The Learner Support Fund may consider contributions towards the cost of deposits or registration fees. It will contribute towards snacks, drinks and meals, but it will not cover any costs not included within the usual basic rate charged.

Financial support for external Ofsted-approved childcare provider costs will be considered if a place at an attached ncn campus nursery is not available due to the following reasons (where applicable evidence is required):

•An ncn setting cannot accommodate the child for at least 50% of the parent’s timetabled hours.
•The learner requires breakfast or after-school club provision.
•The learner has a disability or severe medical condition which presents difficulties in transporting their child to an ncn nursery.
•The child has unusual severe physical, mental or medical needs that an ncn setting cannot support.

For more information about the Learner Support Fund, see the Student Services team or contact us on 0115 9 100 100.
