Students feel the heat from the kitchen

Students feel the heat from the kitchen

Our Hospitality Management students have shown they have what it takes to make it in the industry after impressing Nottingham diners when they took charge at Marco Pierre White’s (MPW) restaurant for one night only as part of a special business challenge.

As part of their university-level course, students were tasked with planning, organising and running their own themed evening from scratch. They have been working hard for the past six months on their business idea, being mentored by the MPW team on everything from advertising and branding to operations and costings.

The menu, which students devised themselves with the support of MPW’s Head Chef, Mark Astbury, was inspired by authentic tastes from dishes around the world.

This is the third consecutive year that the college has collaborated with the restaurant and as a result of another successful event, they will be joining forces again next year.

Adama Manga, 20, is a chef at The Frustrated Chef in Beeston alongside her ncn studies. Her ambition is to one-day open her own traditional African-themed restaurant. She said: “I really enjoyed working with the professional team at Marco’s and I’ve learnt so much through the process. I definitely benefitted from the front of house experience because this isn’t an area I usually work in. It was rewarding using the theory I’ve learnt at college and putting it into practice for this challenge. All our hard work paid off and we received some great feedback from both the customers and Marco’s team, who all commented on our professionalism and the level of service they received.”

ncn CEO, John van de Laarschot, hosted a table. He said: “It was fantastic to see our students working together in a busy commercial environment showcasing the skills they’ve learnt on their course. It was clear from the standard of the evening that the students had put a lot of thought and effort into the planning of this event, and their professionalism shone through. I would like to congratulate them for their hard work and I would like to thank Marco’s team for their continued support.”
