Hospitality and Catering at ncn

Welcome to Hospitality and Catering at ncn...

We offer a wide range of full-time and part-time Hospitality and Catering courses; as well as our apprenticeships which allow you to gain qualifications while you work. Our learners also have opportunities to support high profile local events; during 2010 this included working alongside industry professionals Momma Cherri and Gino D’Acampo at the Nottingham Food and Drink Festival.

Our full-time and part-time Hospitality Courses are designed to meet the vocationally-relevant training and development needs of a wide range of employees and employers, and are based at ncn City (Adams) and ncn Clarendon in fully equipped training kitchens. We also have a purpose-built demonstration theatre and a commercial training restaurant: the Adams Restaurant and Brasserie, that serves contemporary cuisine, prepared, cooked, presented and served by students to the highest standards. This enables our learners to experience the many facets of a commercial restaurant in a realistic working environment.

Our learners also regularly compete in regional and national competitions. Previous students have won prestigious prizes, including the East Midlands Chef of the Year and the East Midlands Professional Chef of the Year. The Catering and Hospitality Work-based Learning team were named Training Provider of the Year at the Nottinghamshire Training Network (NTN) Awards 2011. This annual event celebrates work-based learners (including apprentices), employers and training providers from across the county. This follows the award of National Hospitality Apprentice Provider of the Year at the Hospitality Apprenticeship Awards 2010, run by the Hospitality Skills Alliance with leading awarding body EDI and partners.

Our apprentices are given the opportunity to train off-site in the workplace. This training is supported through ncn, by a workplace tutor/assessor who will visit you regularly.

We also run short courses for employees to attend to meet legislative requirements: including Food, Hygiene, Health and Safety, Security and Licensing, and we also develop bespoke training programmes to meet specific company needs.

Apprenticeships

Find out more about Hospitality and Catering Apprenticeships...

We support a wide range of Hospitality and Catering employers that have apprentices or advanced apprentices that are being trained through ncn.

Our rationale, and how we work with employers:

  • To support the recruitment of staff to the Hospitality and Catering industries, through work-based learning and work experience opportunities.

  • Junior Chefs and Junior Pastry Chefs Academy was developed by Compass Group UK, and helps to attract 14-16 year olds to the Hospitality and Catering industry.

  • Employers are involved in judging internal catering competitions, which lead to ncn learners competing in national catering competitions

  • ncn regularly holds themed evenings and showcase dinners to help develop and promote the talents of its learners

  • Many of these have gone on to compete in the Nottingham Restaurant Awards and Young Chef of the Year Competition

Benefits to Employers:

  • Supports training needs of employers

  • Supports the drive to upskill employees and potential employees

  • Gives students a realistic experience of the industry; engaging them from an early age and providing career choices

  • Supports the drive to retain trained and skilled staff in the industry

  • Ensures employers are compliant with legal requirements

  • Supports the recruitment of apprentices for employers

  • Helps with the retention of staff and reduced recruitment costs

  • Supports the initiative to raise skills levels

  • Facilitates the personal development of staff through Basic Skills training

  • Provides progression opportunities for staff to higher level courses while in employment
