Construction and Technology at ncn

Welcome to Construction and Technology at ncn...

ncn is the largest provider of construction training in the East Midlands. The specialist workshops at ncn Basford Hall include facilities for bricklaying, plumbing, gas, painting and decorating, carpentry and joinery, plastering, refrigeration, tiling, welding, heating and ventilation, maintenance operations, interior fitting and finishing, construction plant operations and electrical services. Each area is fully equipped with the materials and machinery you need to practise your skills in a professional, hands-on environment.

We have close links with local and regional employers in the sector, and there are opportunities for apprenticeships and work placements. Being proactively involved in consultation with our industry helps us to determine and develop our provision to meet industry needs. It also allows us to help other agencies and organisations service our industry to the same high standards.

We support a wide range of Construction and Allied Industries employers that have apprentices or advanced apprentices that are being trained through ncn.

 

Facilities

Our Objectives:

  • To be at the forefront of providing Construction training and education across the East Midlands area and beyond.

  • To provide industry-standard facilities, and to encourage a wide range of employers to access our services.

  • To work on our services regarding Construction and to develop innovative solutions toward low carbon sustainable industry.

  • The College is a a leader in legislative training and assessment, including gas safety, water regulations, electrical inspection and testing.

  • The College is a a leader in specialist training and qualifications, including Refrigeration, and Heating and Ventilation.

Recruitment

Our Rationale:

  • Working closely with employers to deliever the industry sector skills agreements relating to apprenticeships and workforce development.

  • Working with a number of agencies to actively promote direct recruitment through training and up-skilling, including learning brokers, Business Link, New Technology Initiative (NTI) and East Midlands Development Agency (EMDA), all of whom are involved in the wider Employer Engagement arena.

Training

Our Rationale:

To satisfy the vocational training and development needs of a wide range of employers and their employees, ncn:

  • Currently has a number of employed operatives working towards obtaining nationally-recognised vocational qualifications, as well as obtaining Construction Skills Certification (CSCS).

  • Offers bespoke training, including delivering woodworking machine training for the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), ACS assessment, on site assessment and testing, and training in Portable Appliance Testing.

  • Offers Intermediate and Advanced Apprenticeships in 14 industry areas.

  • Aims at meeting the individual needs of employers.

Benefits to Employers:

  • Enables employers to react responsibly to the changing demands of the industry, in particular referring to Health & Safety, environmental policy changes, waste management, sustainable construction, renewable energies and building control regulations.

Our work with employers:

Federation of Master Builders (representing over 2000 employers in the Midlands):

  • Employer group brought together to discuss and provide advice on what the focus of training should be in our new Construction Centre at Basford Hall Campus.

  • Director of Construction is a co-opted member of the FMB regional councils (Midlands, Yorkshire and Trent) and acts as a regional and national advisor on construction training matters.

  • ncn regularly speaks at regional conferences, to update council on developments in education and training, both in the UK and abroad.

Nottingham Construction Forum (representing over 300 local employers):

  • Jointly develops and presents industry symposia to encourage innovation and new technologies in construction.

  • ncn sits on the Painting and Decorating Association's Education Committee (representing over 1200 employers in the Midlands and South region) to advise and develop training standards for the industry.

  • Director of Construction is a board member of NCF.

SASIE Ltd (renewable energies installer):

  • Provided initial advice and guidance for new curriculum developments to be integrated with the Basford Hall facilities.

  • Acting as a link with the Building Research Establishment and other UK agencies.

  • Will be directly involved in developing full training awards for renewable energy installers, to be delivered at Basford Hall.

  • ncn provides a 'single point of contact' service for the industry, as represented by the organisations we work with.

  • Employers have direct influence upon the provision portfolio and delivery at ncn, as well as upon the development of new initiatives such as renewable energies, training, etc.

  • Employers have a better understanding of the complexity of modern qualifications and the need to support their apprentices fully.
