Leading the way to greener living…
An exciting new concept in low-carbon, energy-efficient housing is being launched at ncn Basford Hall on 19 May resulting from collaboration between New College Nottingham (ncn) and Eco Modular Housing (East Midlands).
Creative, affordable housing with design flexibility
The prototype two-bedroom contemporary show home – built from a recycled shipping container and then installed on site in three days – demonstrates the possibilities for creating sustainable, affordable housing.
Meeting government requirements to reduce the global carbon output, it boasts high-quality kitchen units, interior finishes, furniture and carpets. The units, built to National House-Building Council (NHBC) standards, can be single or multiple (subject to planning) and designed to suit the end user’s requirements.
Demonstrating green construction techniques
The project will also teach ncn students about environmentally-friendy construction and a second,
unfinished unit has been donated for this purpose. The students will be involved in real construction projects from planning to completion, including surveying, design and project management.
The next phase will involve transforming the prototype unit into a four-bedroom house by adding a two-bed extension and carport. Energy efficiency measures such as solar hot water heating, micro electricity generation and rainwater harvesting will also be designed and installed in the houses.
