What kind of student is this course suitable for?

This course can help you develop your interest in, appreciation and knowledge of film through studying the way it constructs meaning. The course will allow you to develop a more sophisticated analytical approach to this major art form and will give you a chance to find out more about film research and production. You will also look at how film raises issues of personal, social, cultural, political and ethical significance.

Entry Requirements

'AS': at least Grade C in GCSE English
'A2': at least Grade E in 'AS' Film Studies

Course Content

2 units at 'AS' Level, including:

  • Exploring Film Form: you will cover the technical elements of film such as performance and sound and then produce a portfolio, including a short analysis of a film extract, creation of a short film, a photographic storyboard, or an extended step outline
  • British and American Film: British genres, 1980s British film, American genres and film industry; and British film audiences

2 units at 'A2' Level, including:

  • Film Research and Creative Projects: production of a portfolio of creative work, plus a short research project into a film issue
  • The Film Experience – Issues and Debates: world cinema, film styles, and a critical study of a range of films

Visiting speakers and visits to film events and organisations are arranged throughout the course.
