English Literature can be studied at ncn High Pavement Sixth Form College.
What will I achieve from the course?
The course combines a detailed study of literature with the opportunity to read more widely and independently. You will learn to consider:
- the central role of narrative in literary texts
- aspects of literary representation and of genre (tragedy) and the significance of genre (the Gothic)
- different ways of reading texts and the application of critical ideas
Keen writers have the option of joining our magazine group. You will also have the opportunity to enter a variety of competitions during the year, including the National Poetry Day competition in October which is open to all ncn students. There will be opportunities for theatre trips, visits and lectures by outside speakers.
Where the course may lead?
‘A’ Level Literature can lead to a higher education course in Literature, Law or History. An ‘A’ Level Literature graduate will be able to consider careers in teaching, the arts and broadcasting.

Entry Requirements
'AS': at least Grade C in GCSE English Language and/or English Literature
'A2': at least Grade E in 'AS' English Literature
Course Content
2 units at 'AS' Level, including:
- Aspects of Narrative: the ways in which texts work and reader responses
- Aspects of Genre: the dramatic genre studied will be tragedy
2 units at 'A2' Level, including:
- The Significance of Genre: elements of the Gothic
- Further and Independent Reading and the Introduction of Critical Ideas
Throughout the course students will be encouraged to attend theatre productions of the texts studied and to watch film versions of set and related texts.
