What kind of student is this course suitable for?
If you enjoy English, but feel that you can't choose between English Language and English Literature, this is the right course for you. 'A' Level English Language and Literature combines elements of linguistics with literature so that you will have the best of both worlds. We focus on spoken language and language production as well as studying a wide range of literary texts.

- 'AS' in Year 1
- 'A2' in Year 2
Entry Requirements
'AS':
- At least Grade C in GCSE English
'A2':
- At least Grade E in 'AS' English Language and Literature
Course Content
2 units at 'AS' Level, including:
- Integrated Analysis and Text Production: literary and stylistics issues and language production
- Analysing Speech and Its Representation: one question will be an unseen comparative analysis of different speech texts. The other will be based on a set text and will examine the representation of speech and other stylistic issues.
2 units at 'A2' Level, including:
- Comparative Analysis and Text Adaptation: one question will be an unseen comparative analysis of three different types of text of different genres, modes and/or historical periods. The other will be a recasting task and commentary.
- Comparative Analysis through Independent Study. Coursework - a comparative essay based on two texts.
Assessment
Examinations and coursework.
