Through the exploration of ‘upcycling’ techniques the students used a range of design processes, from fabric manipulation through to re-design and re-structuring. Some of the sleeping bags were changed into multi-functional objects which transform from a functional sleeping bag into a garment or bag.
The exhibition is free to view Monday to Friday between 9am and 4.30pm at the ncn Lace Market Gallery, 25 Stoney Street.

Eva Brudenell
Dave - December 2011 and January 2012
Eva’s illustrations are based on observations of people going about their everyday lives, capturing things that are taken for granted like catching the bus to work or sitting in a café.
The story of Dave began when Eva rediscovered the children's book Treehorn's Treasure, written by Florence Parry Heide and illustrated by Edward Gorey. This was the first book she read as a child and she never forgot how descriptive and absorbing the illustrations were.
Eva comments: “I love the directness of pen and paper rather than computer-based illustration and I try to put in a lot of detail and expression to assist the viewer in pursuing the narrative. When I invented Dave my main aim was to create a character like Treehorn that people could empathise with and warm to. Drawing is a language without words.”

Dan Lavrnja
Detached Observations – Passionate Interpretations - July 2011
Born in Mansfield in the 1950’s, Dan had a keen interest in photographing the city of Nottingham and had intended to put on an exhibition of cityscapes.
Dan was interested in portraying the mundane; a bus stop, a billboard or shop window as he felt that people would often bypass the ordinary. He was a prolific recorder of landscapes – urban and natural – imbuing them with a heightened sense of reality. This imagery was captured in his unique style, causing the viewer to look differently at the city.

Sarah Dempsey
The art of language - March 2011
Local artist, Sarah Dempsey, will be exhibiting Writing Room - an art installation which investigates the visual power and adaptability of language - at the ncn Lace Market Gallery from 1 to 18 March.
The concept of the exhibition is to question how we view objects, consume text and how we relate objects and words to their surroundings and their context.
Sarah comments: “My work explores the potential of language, objects, space, and our imagination. For me, this is a way of storytelling, but the true narrative of these stories is defined by the viewer. So much can be taken from just one line, from a book that contains thousands of words. I think that this shows the never ending potential of the language that lies beneath the cover of a book.”
