student

Counsellors are based within College and can help students with any personal problems or issues affecting their learning. If a student is feeling down or stressed, no matter how trivial they may feel the problem is, then they can make an appointment to see a Counsellor.

They are there to listen to students and will not judge them in any way. Often talking to someone about worries can make a student feel better.

What is counselling?

Counselling is an opportunity for you to talk and share your problems. If something is on your mind and perhaps getting in the way of doing your course or simply making you feel bad a lot of the time, then it's worth thinking about talking it over with a counsellor.

No problem is too small nor is anything too serious.

Often it helps to talk to someone who is impartial, who is not involved as a friend or family member would be. Counsellors aim to be as understanding as they can of the issues you bring and the feelings you have about them. Counselling is a process, helping you to explore your feelings, thoughts and behaviour. Doing this can perhaps cause relief and may enable you to make some changes in your life, or it may help you to understand a little better what is going on with things that cannot be changed.

What problems do Counsellors help with?

There are many issues that Counsellors can help with. Some of the issues include:

  • sadness
  • loneliness
  • relationship problems
  • stress
  • depression
  • anxiety and panic attacks
  • self esteem
  • decision making
  • eating disorders
  • course worries
  • exam stress

... and many more.

Sometimes there are problems at college, relationships with tutors or friends, disillusionment with your course or unable to concentrate on work. Talking it over with the counsellor can enable you to gain a new perspective, and feel supported through difficult times.

Counsellors can also be of help when there are no specific problems, but you could use the space to explore hopes, dreams and who you really are.

Confidentiality

The service is confidential, in accordance with the Code of Standards and Ethics of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy.

However, if you specifically wish us to liaise with your tutor, we are able to do so.

Counselling Appointments

Initial appointments can be made through any main campus reception or by emailing counselling@ncn.ac.uk. Your initial appointment will be offered as soon as possible, and will last for 50 minutes, allowing you to explore your needs and difficulties with the counsellor. Sometimes this may be enough, but you may wish to continue with ongoing counselling. If this is agreed you will see the counsellor on a regular basis, usually once a week for a 50 minutes session.

We try to see people at short notice, so if there is something which you feel cannot wait, then get in touch.

If for any reason you cannot keep an appointment, please let us know, as we can then see other clients who may be waiting. If you are more than 15 minutes late for an appointment, we may offer that appointment to another person.
